We sat down with Polished Makeup & Hair, a local company specializing in wedding makeup & hair. They love building confidence in women through their outstanding beauty services. We had a chance to talk with Samantha, the Team Lead/Founder.
Tell me about your company? Where are you located?
We are Polished Makeup & Hair. I recently rebranded this last year to fit our style a little more. We specialize in airbrush makeup. Polished Makeup & Hair goal is to help you feel better in your own skin, more confident and to look fabulous while bringing out your features.
We are located in the SouthWest area of Houston but we travel all over Texas and the world!
What inspired you to enter the wedding industry?
I started in the industry doing makeup for photography (maternity, boudoir, etc.). I had some friends and family getting married so that introduced me to the wedding industry.
I have been in the bridal industry for 7 years but I have been in the professional world for hair and makeup for 11 years now.
What is one thing you wish you had known when you began your career?
That not every client is for every artist and that is okay! Not every client is for you and that I stayed with my style.
What is one common myth about your profession that you want to debunk?
A lot of people have the misconception that the more makeup, the longer it lasts – the more makeup, the better. In my experience, the lighter the makeup, the better. We love to work in light layers so you don’t feel like anything is on.
What is the best compliment you have received regarding your work?
Just showing someone their finished look! We like to wait to show them anything until makeup & hair are finished, so it’s a true shock. It’s so heartwarming to see the excitement on their face once we show them the finished look. I love it!
How many weddings do you take per year?
Over the years, it has been fluctuating as we grow our team. Right now, we are a team of 10 (which is the most that we have ever had!). I had to give 2021 a number, then I would say 70-80 weddings.
Out of those 70-80 weddings you do per year, how many would you say you do with a hired Certified Wedding Planner?
Right now it is 60%-70% working with a planner. As we take on more weddings, that number grows. Brides are also understanding that if there isn’t a planner, then everything is a hot mess, and very stressful!
Can you tell me why you prefer working weddings when a Certified Wedding Planner is hired by the couple?
Planners just make everything less stressful and you lift a weight off the couple’s shoulders! It lets the bride relax while we are doing her makeup and hair, if she doesn’t have to worry about the other vendors and who is arriving when.
Can you describe a mishap that took place at a wedding that wasn’t hired?
For the brides that don’t hire a planner, they are usually the ones running behind on the day’s timeline. They might be late going down the aisle. They don’t take in account that we need this much time for decorations, or that we need this or that. You tend to worry about the no-so fun stuff on your wedding day when there isn’t a planner.
Can you describe a situation where a Certified wedding planner saved the day?
Yes! While working on this bride, the bride was calling this vendor (who was in charge of plates, cups, utensils, etc.) who wasn’t answering the phone. After the wedding planner finally got a hold of the vendor company, they were told that person was let go and no one else from the company was coming in their place. This was only a few hours before the ceremony.
The planner kept calm which kept the bride calm. The planner was able to go to the store and get plates, cups, utensils, etc. so that everyone could actually eat!
Do you wish all your couples hired a certified wedding planner?
Oh yes, 100% I am actually planning my own wedding and that is one necessity needed.
